Giovanni Salvemini da Castiglione

Giovanni Salvemini da Castiglione, known as Jean-Paul de Gua de Malves, was an Italian mathematician born in Castiglione. His mathematical education began at the University of Pisa, before he moved to Lausanne, Switzerland, where he adopted his new name.

Academic Career

In 1751, de Gua de Malves became a professor at Utrecht University, serving as its rector from 1758. In 1764, he moved to Berlin, where he spent the rest of his life teaching mathematics and working at the Berlin Observatory.

Mathematical Contributions

Among de Gua de Malves' original works are two articles on the cardioid curve and other research in geometry. However, his main contribution to mathematics lies in his work as a publisher.

Publishing Activities

De Gua de Malves translated Newton's "Universal Arithmetic" and Locke's "Elements of Physics" into French. He prepared the correspondence of Leibniz and Bernoulli for publication and edited the works of Leonhard Euler.
