Biography of David Teece

David Teece was born on September 2, 1948, and grew up in Blenheim and Nelson, New Zealand. He attended Waimea College before enrolling at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch in 1967. At Canterbury, Teece earned a bachelor's degree and later a master's degree in commerce. He then moved to the United States to study at the University of Pennsylvania, where he obtained a Ph.D. in economics, specializing in industrial economics, international trade, and technological innovation. During his time at Penn, Teece was influenced by pioneers in research and development, Edwin Mansfield, and Nobel laureate Oliver Williamson.

Academic Career

After completing his education, Teece taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business from 1975 to 1982. He then joined the Walter A. Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, where he remains a part-time professor. Teece has published over 200 academic articles and authored more than ten books. He is a co-founder and editorial board member of two academic journals, Industrial & Corporate Change and Russian Management Journal. His work titled 'Profiting from Technological Innovation' in 1986 was recognized as one of the best works published in the journal Research Policy from 1971 to 1991. In this research, Teece explained why innovative companies often struggle to reap economic benefits from their inventions, emphasizing the importance of marketing, distribution, and production in addition to groundbreaking ideas.

Contributions to Organizational Theory

Teece's name is closely associated with the concept of dynamic capabilities in strategic management. Dynamic capabilities refer to the ability to integrate, create, and reconfigure internal and external competencies to respond quickly to changing environments. According to ScienceWatch, Teece's work 'Dynamic Capabilities and Strategic Management,' co-authored with Gary Pisano and Amy Shuen, is the most cited paper in the field of economics and business from 1995 to 2005.

Professional Achievements

In addition to his academic career, Teece has made significant contributions as a consultant and entrepreneur. In February 2010, he founded Berkeley Research Group, a consulting firm with offices in 23 locations across the United States, Calgary, and London. Teece has also been recognized by various organizations for his expertise and accomplishments. Accenture included him in their list of 'Top 50 Business Intellectuals' in 2002. The University of Lappeenranta awarded him the first Vyborg National Award for his contributions to strategic management and the study of production and distribution processes. In 2013, Teece was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his efforts in promoting relations between the United States and New Zealand.
