Biography of David Thompson
David John Howard Thompson was born in December 1961 in London, United Kingdom. He is the third child of Charles and Margaret Thompson. Although he spent his early childhood in London, the Thompson family later moved to Barbados. David attended St. Gabriel's Junior School before successfully transitioning to Combermere School.
Early Leadership
From a young age, David exhibited immense intellectual potential, and his teachers quickly noticed his talents. By the time he reached the senior classes, he became a school leader, actively participating in school activities and excelling in public speaking. He particularly excelled in social disciplines and public presentations. Soon, David became one of the most popular hosts of the school's political television program, "Understanding." Despite his young age, David demonstrated a deep understanding of historical and political issues, possessed his own point of view, and skillfully defended it.
Career and Political Journey
In 1979, at a young age, David Thompson began teaching in his own school while preparing for university. In 1984, he obtained his first higher education degree. From 1986 to 1988, Thompson taught at the university. However, his ambitions and political knowledge soon became evident. In 1987, he participated in parliamentary elections for the first time and easily secured the necessary votes in the St. John constituency.
In 1991, David Thompson was appointed as the Minister of Community Development and Culture. From 1993 to 1994, he served as the Minister of Finance in Erskine Sandiford's government. Following the defeat of the Labor Party in the 1994 elections, Thompson became the leader of the party and held this high position until September 2001. In January 2006, he once again became the leader of the Labor Party, replacing Clyde Mascoll.
On January 16, 2008, Thompson achieved a brilliant victory in the elections, replacing Owen Arthur as the leader of the Democratic Labor Party of Barbados and simultaneously becoming the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.

David Thompson is a man of diverse interests. He is an avid reader and music enthusiast. Despite his extremely busy schedule, he actively engages in public life and finds time for his hobbies, such as cricket and football.
David Thompson is married to Mary Josephine Mara, and they have three daughters: Misha, Oya, and Oca-Mary.
