Biography of Davor Suker
Early Life and CareerDavor Suker is a Croatian football player, born on January 1, 1968, in Osijek, Yugoslavia. He began playing for his local team in Osijek at the age of 16, where he quickly became the top striker. In 1989, he joined the Zagreb-based team, Dinamo, where he scored 34 goals in 60 matches over the next two seasons. This performance earned him a call-up to the Yugoslavian national team, but with the start of the war in Croatia in 1991, Suker moved to Sevilla.
Sevilla and Real Madrid
Suker made his debut for Sevilla on November 17, 1991, and quickly made an impact by scoring a goal in his second match. In the 1993-1994 season, he became the second top scorer in the Spanish Premier League, scoring 24 goals. In 1996-1997, Suker joined Real Madrid and had a successful spell, winning the Spanish league, the UEFA Super Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. However, his third season with Real Madrid was not as successful, and he scored only four goals in 19 league games before leaving the club.
English Period and Later Career
After leaving Real Madrid, Suker moved to the English Premier League and joined Arsenal in 1999. Although he initially struggled to find his form, he scored eight goals in 22 games for the club. In the following season, he transferred to West Ham United but failed to make an impact, scoring only two goals in 11 matches. Suker then joined 1860 Munich for the 2001-2002 season, where he scored five goals in 23 matches.
International Career and Achievements
Suker's most successful period came during the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. He scored six goals in seven matches and won the Golden Boot and the Silver Ball for his performances. Suker played a crucial role in helping Croatia finish in third place, defeating the Netherlands and losing only to the tournament's champions, France. He was named the Best Player of Croatia by UEFA and was included in FIFA's list of the 125 greatest football players.
Throughout his career, Suker represented both Yugoslavia and Croatia. He scored 15 goals in 23 matches for the Yugoslavian youth national team and was part of the team that finished in second place in the 1987 Youth World Cup. He made his debut for the Croatian national team in 1990 and went on to score 45 goals, becoming the team's all-time leading scorer.
Despite his early success, Suker's later career did not live up to the same standards. However, his contributions to Croatian football and his achievements on the international stage will always be remembered.
