However, her immune system couldn't fight off the infection in her extremities, and gradually her limbs began to die. The doctors started to lose hope, even advising Bob to prepare for the worst. The doctors initially hoped to amputate only her feet, but during the surgery, they had to remove her legs up to the knees. Debbie also lost half of her right hand and her left pinky finger.

The loss of both legs drastically changed Debbie's life, forcing her to adapt her plans. However, she refused to give in to her circumstances. Her wedding remained a beacon of hope and determination. As she said, "I had waited for it for too long." Debbie allowed herself one final delay, as she had to learn how to use prosthetics in order to walk down the aisle. It took her a year of hard work and perseverance, but eventually, Debbie was able to say "I do" on her wedding day.
