Early Life and Education
Debra Haaland is an American politician who serves as the U.S. Representative for New Mexico's 1st congressional district. Born in Winslow, Arizona, she is a member of the Pueblo of Laguna tribe. Her mother served in the U.S. Navy, while her father was a Marine Corps officer and Vietnam War veteran.
Haaland earned a Bachelor of Arts in English (1994) and a Juris Doctor (2006) from the University of New Mexico.
Political Involvement
Obama Campaign and Democratic Party LeadershipIn 2012, Haaland played a role in Barack Obama's presidential campaign in New Mexico. Two years later, she was selected by the Democratic Party as the candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico, running alongside gubernatorial candidate and state Attorney General Gary King. The Republican ticket of Susana Martinez and John Sanchez ultimately won the election.
In April 2015, Haaland was elected as the Chair of the New Mexico Democratic Party for a two-year term. Upon its expiration, she announced her intention to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in New Mexico's 1st congressional district, replacing Michelle Lujan Grisham who was stepping down to run for Governor.

In the November 6, 2018, election, Haaland emerged victorious with 59.1% of the vote, becoming the first Native American woman to represent New Mexico in Congress.
