Christiane Lambrecht
Christiane Lambrecht is a German politician and lawyer who has served as Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection since 2019.
Early Life and Education
Lambrecht was born in Mannheim, Germany, in 1965. She attended the Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium in Viernheim, graduating in 1984. She then pursued a law degree at the Universities of Mannheim and Mainz, completing her first state examination in 1992 and her second in 1995. Lambrecht also obtained a degree in public administration from the University of Speyer in 1995.
Legal Career
From 1992 to 1998, Lambrecht served as a lecturer at the Berufsakademie Mannheim, specializing in commercial and corporate law. She also established a private law practice in Viernheim in 1995.
Political Career
Lambrecht joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in 1982 and initially engaged in local politics. In 1998, she was elected to the Bundestag (German Parliament) as the representative for the Bergstraße constituency. She was re-elected multiple times.
From 2009 to 2011, Lambrecht served as the SPD parliamentary group's spokesperson before becoming its deputy chair. In March 2018, she was appointed Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Finance, Olaf Scholz.
Minister of Justice
On June 27, 2019, Lambrecht was appointed Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection by Chancellor Angela Merkel. She succeeded Katarina Barley, who had resigned after being elected to the European Parliament.
