Early Life and Education
Dennis Bonnen was born on March 3, 1972, in Houston, Texas, and raised in Angleton. His older brother, Greg, was born in 1966. Dennis graduated from Angleton High School in 1990 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in political science from St. Edward's University in Austin in 1994. In 2001, St. Edward's University bestowed upon him the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Political Career
During his undergraduate years, Bonnen served as a legislative aide to the Texas House of Representatives in 1993 and was a member of Republican Bob Dole's presidential campaign advance team in 1995. In 1996, he won a seat in the Texas Legislature at the age of 24, while Dole lost his bid against Bill Clinton.
Bonnen was appointed Speaker Pro Tempore by then-House Speaker Joe Straus in 2013. He has also served as chairman of the Sunset Advisory Commission, vice-chair of the Joint Oversight Committee on School Performance Oversight, and represents the Natural Resources Committee.
Civic and Community Involvement
In addition to his political endeavors, Bonnen is the CEO of Heritage Bank in Pearland. His brother, Greg, is a neurosurgeon who also serves on the board of directors of Heritage Bank. Bonnen is a founding member of the Brazoria Heritage Foundation and the Angleton Exchange Club. He is a longtime supporter and advisory board member of the Boy Scouts of America, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and Junior Achievement. In 2009, the Houston Business Journal named Bonnen to its "40 Under 40" list, recognizing him for his business achievements.
Personal Life
Dennis Bonnen is married to Kimberly M. Bonnen, born in 1975. They have two sons, Jackson and Gregory.
