Dennis Howard Marks, a British writer, DJ, and infamous marijuana and hashish trader, was born in Kenfig Hill, Wales, in a family of a merchant navy skipper. He began studying physics and philosophy at Balliol College, Oxford in 1964, where he first encountered marijuana and gained his initial experience in illegal trade.
Early Illegal Activities
In the early 1970s, while collaborating with Irish separatists and the British Secret Service MI6, Marks established a large-scale import of hashish through Ireland into the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States. In 1973, Marks was arrested for the first time and received a two-year suspended sentence, pushing him further into the world of illegal activities. He later collaborated with the CIA, the Sicilian mafia, the Yakuza, and the "Brotherhood of Eternal Love." Marks went on to create 25 fictitious companies, possessed documents for 40 surnames, and had numerous aliases, the most famous being "Mr. Nice." He operated shipments of hashish that reached up to 50 tons. The American anti-narcotics organization, DEA, holds Marks responsible for 10% of the worldwide hashish trade from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s.
Legal Troubles and Activism
In 1987, Marks was arrested in Spain, extradited to the United States, and sentenced to 25 years in prison. However, he was deported back to the United Kingdom in 1995. Currently, Marks is an active member of the anti-prohibitionist movement, involved in entrepreneurship, and renowned as the author of the popular memoir book "Mr. Nice" (1997). He is also a DJ.
