Early Life and Career

Dennis Miller was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 3, 1953, and grew up in the suburb of Castle Shannon. Raised by his mother, Norma, after his parents divorced, Miller's Scottish heritage played a significant role in his upbringing. He pursued journalism at Point Park University, drawn to its perceived simplicity.

Stand-up Comedy and 'Saturday Night Live'

Miller began his comedy career in the early 1980s, performing at comedy clubs such as Catch A Rising Star and The Comic Strip in New York City, and The Comedy Store in Los Angeles. He gained recognition in 1985 when he was discovered by Lorne Michaels at The Comedy Store.

Joining the cast of 'Saturday Night Live,' Miller initially served as a backup for John Lovitz in the Weekend Update segment. With Lovitz's frequent wardrobe changes, Miller found himself anchoring the news desk and developed his signature delivery of tongue-in-cheek commentary.

Political Commentary and Talk Shows

After leaving 'Saturday Night Live' in 1991, Miller launched his own late-night talk show, 'The Dennis Miller Show.' Known for its alternative lineup featuring indie rock bands and unconventional guests, it struggled with low ratings and was canceled.

Undeterred, Miller debuted 'Dennis Miller Live' in 1994. This half-hour talk show focused on Miller's monologues and interviews with a single guest. The show garnered critical acclaim and ran for eight seasons, winning five Emmy Awards.

Conservative Turn and Political Affiliations

Miller's political views evolved over time. Initially a leftist, he became more critical of Democrats following the September 11th attacks. He aligned himself with Republican candidates and supported the Iraq War.

Miller's conservative viewpoints were reflected in his role as a regular political commentator on Fox News' 'The O'Reilly Factor,' where he hosted his own segment, 'Miller Time,' and on Hannity & Colmes' 'Free Speech' segment.

Post-Talk Show Career

Miller's projects have maintained a strong political slant. He has hosted a daily three-hour radio show on Westwood One since 2014. In 2018, Comedy Central ranked Miller 21st on its list of "100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time."

Personal Life

Miller is married to Carolyn "Ali" Espley, a former Vancouver fashion model. The couple lives in Santa Barbara, California with their two sons, Holden and Marlon.
