Derviş Eroğlu: A Life in Cypriot Politics
Early Life and EducationDr. Derviş Eroğlu was born in 1938 in Famagusta, on the southeastern coast of Cyprus. He studied medicine at Istanbul University in Turkey.
Political Career
Early RolesUpon being elected to the Assembly of the Republic of Northern Cyprus (then known as the Turkish Federated State of Northern Cyprus) in 1976, Eroğlu served as Minister of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports from 1976-1977.
As Prime Minister
As leader of the conservative National Unity Party, Derviş became the Prime Minister of the TRNC in four consecutive cabinets from 1985-1993. He was Leader of the Opposition from 1994-1996 before再度 serving as Prime Minister from 1996-2004.
Return to Power
Eroğlu's National Unity Party regained a parliamentary majority (44%) in the elections of April 18, 2009. Dr. Derviş thus returned to the position of Prime Minister after a five-year absence.
Presidency
In the presidential elections of April 18, 2010, Derviş narrowly defeated incumbent President Mehmet Ali Talat. He took the oath of office on April 23, 2010, becoming the third President of the TRNC.
Political Stance
In his political views, Eroğlu is not a proponent of reuniting the island. Rather, he is seen as a "hardliner" towards the Greek Cypriot side.
Personal Life
Derviş Eroğlu is married and has four children and three grandchildren.
