Deval Laurdine Patrick was born in 1956 in Chicago, Illinois. He had a challenging childhood as his family was not wealthy, and his father left his mother and children. Patrick had varying relationships with his father throughout his life. After completing high school, Patrick enrolled in Milton Academy and later attended Harvard College, where he specialized in English and American literature and graduated in 1978. Following his graduation, Patrick spent a year working for the United Nations in Africa before returning to the United States in 1979 to attend Harvard Law School. During his time at Harvard, he also worked at the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau.
Career
In 1994, Patrick was appointed as an assistant attorney general in the Clinton administration, where he dealt with issues such as racism, police oversight, and discrimination. Despite facing criticism during his tenure, Patrick continued his career in law. He moved to Boston in 1997 and worked at the law firm "Day, Berry & Howard." From 2000 to 2004, he worked at the "Coca-Cola Company" in Atlanta. In 2005, Patrick announced his candidacy for the governor of Massachusetts as a representative of the Democratic Party. In November 2006, he became the 71st governor of Massachusetts, defeating the vice-governor Kerry Healey, Republican candidate Christy Mihos, and Green-Rainbow party candidate Grace Ross.
Accomplishments
During his tenure as governor, Patrick implemented various reforms that had been long-awaited. He prioritized supporting science, recognizing Massachusetts as a hub for scientists and scientific resources. He also spearheaded educational reforms to improve the funding of public schools, implemented pension reforms, and took steps to transform the healthcare system. Patrick placed a significant emphasis on preserving the region's ecology. Additionally, he has been a proponent of same-sex marriage and Massachusetts became the first state in the US to register same-sex marriages.
Personal Life
Deval Patrick has been married to Diane Patrick since 1984, and they have two daughters, Sarah and Katherine. In July 2008, Katherine publicly revealed her homosexuality, stating that her father was unaware of this when he opposed an amendment against same-sex marriage. Later, the governor expressed his support and gratitude to his daughter. Patrick is also known for his opposition to the death penalty, believing that it does not solve the problem of crime. In April 2009, Patrick confirmed his intention to seek re-election for a second term as governor in 2010.
