Early Life and Career
Tim Walz was born in West Point, Nebraska, and raised in Chadron. He graduated from Chadron State College with a Bachelor of Science in Education in Social Studies. Walz taught on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and later accepted a teaching job in China.
Military Service and Teaching
In 1981, Walz joined the Army National Guard and served for 24 years, rising to the rank of Sergeant Major. After retiring from the military, he worked as a social studies teacher and football coach in Mankato, Minnesota.
Congressional Career
In 2006, Walz was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota's 1st Congressional District. He was only the fourth non-Republican to be elected from the district. Walz served six terms in Congress, during which time he supported legislation to raise the minimum wage, expand stem cell research, and allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices.
Political Views
Walz identifies as a moderate Democrat. He supports abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, and the legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational use.
Governorship
In 2018, Walz was elected Governor of Minnesota. As governor, he has focused on addressing racial injustice, healthcare, and education.

Following the death of George Floyd in May 2020, Walz mobilized the National Guard and initiated an investigation by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights into the Minneapolis Police Department.
