Early Life

Devyn McDowell Wise was born on May 27, 1984, in Jessup, Maryland. Her parents, Bernadette and Thomas Wise, were not involved in the arts, but Devyn displayed a passion for performance at a young age. At age four, she began pursuing music lessons.

Education

Wise attended Howard High School in Ellicott City, Maryland, where she excelled in choir and developed her exceptional singing voice. She initially aspired to become a psychotherapist due to her empathy and ability to resolve conflicts. However, fate intervened when she was accidentally left in detention and given the option of performing in a school play. At age 15, she discovered her love of acting and decided to make it her career.

Wise moved to New York City to study acting at New York University's prestigious Tisch School of the Arts. She graduated with honors, following in the footsteps of renowned alumni such as Martin Scorsese and M. Night Shyamalan.

Film and Television

Wise's breakout role was in Marc Brouchard's 2008 drama "The Trial," alongside Sarah Jessica Parker and Miranda Richardson. Throughout her career, she has appeared in numerous television series, including "The Mentalist," "The Good Wife," "Boardwalk Empire," and "The Twilight Zone."

Wise rose to prominence in 2017 with her starring role as Nola Darling in Spike Lee's Netflix series "She's Gotta Have It." The show, an adaptation of Lee's 1986 film, follows the adventures of Nola, a sexually liberated woman dating three men simultaneously. Wise's performance earned critical acclaim, solidifying her breakout status.

Recent Work

In 2021, Wise co-starred with Kevin Hart in the drama "Fatherhood," based on the memoir by Matthew Logelin. She recently portrayed Kayla Watts, a helicopter pilot and black-market trafficker, in "Jurassic World: Dominion." This role required extensive physical training, which Wise undertook with great commitment.
