Diana Johnson
Early Life and EducationDiana Johnson was born on July 25, 1966, in Northwich, Cheshire. She attended the Cheshire County Girls Grammar School in Leftwich and later studied history, English, and economics at Sir John Deane's College in Northwich. Johnson went on to earn a Bachelor of Laws degree from Brunel University in Uxbridge and was called to the bar in 1991.
Political Career
Johnson began her political career in 1994 as a councilor in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and rose to the position of head of social services. In 2003, she joined the London Assembly, where she served until 2004.
In 2005, Johnson was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kingston upon Hull North, becoming the first woman to represent the constituency. She was re-elected in 2010.
Government Positions
Within the Labour government, Johnson held various roles, including:- Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Pensions (2005-2007)
- Assistant Government Whip (2007-2009)
- Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools (2009-2010)Shadow Cabinet
After the election of Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party, Johnson was appointed Shadow Foreign Secretary in September 2015. She resigned from this position in 2016 along with other Labour MPs following the Brexit referendum.
Campaigning and Advocacy
Johnson has been an advocate for various issues, including:- Comprehensive sex and relationships education in schools
- Decriminalization of prostitution (Swedish model)
Honors
In 2020, Johnson was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).
