Dick Armey is an American politician, economist, and author. He was born in Cando, North Dakota in 1940 and grew up in a rural farming community.

Education and Early Career

After completing his bachelor's degree in economics from Jamestown College, Armey pursued further studies at the University of North Dakota, where he earned a master's degree. He later received his doctorate in economics from the University of Oklahoma. Armey worked as a professor of economics at Austin College and the University of North Texas in Denton.

Political Career

Armey was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1984, representing the 26th district of Texas. He gained recognition as one of the "Texas Six Pack," a group of Republican freshmen who were elected during that time. In 1995, Armey became the leader of the Republican Party's faction in the House of Representatives. He was known for his involvement in the development of the "Contract with America," a prominent Republican project in the 1990s.

Controversial Statements and Views

Armey made several controversial statements throughout his career. He expressed negative views about Russia, predicting that it would become a "looted and bankrupt zone of nuclear anarchy" by the end of the millennium. He also held strong opinions on Israel, believing that its existence fulfilled biblical prophecies and supported its expansion. Armey was a staunch supporter of President George W. Bush and the Iraq War.

Later Career

After leaving Congress, Armey worked as a senior advisor and consultant at DLA Piper. In 2009, he joined the conservative organization FreedomWorks, where he served as co-chair before being asked to resign in August 2009. The organization actively protested against President Barack Obama's economic policies. Armey has authored several books, including "The Freedom Revolution," "Armey's Axioms: 40 Hard-Earned Truths from Politics, Faith, and Life," and "Give Us Liberty: A Tea Party Manifesto."

Dick Armey is married to Susan Armey, and they have a son named Scott. Scott followed in his father's footsteps and ran for office in 2002 but was unsuccessful in securing his father's seat.
