Early Life and EducationDick Cavett was born on November 19, 1936, in Gibbon, Nebraska. His parents, Alva and Erabelle Cavett, were both teachers. Cavett's mother died of cancer when he was only ten years old.
Cavett attended Lincoln Public Schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1953. He was involved in extracurricular activities such as student council, drama, and magic.
The Yale Years
In 1953, Cavett entered Yale University, where he initially studied English but later switched to drama. He was a member of the Yale Drama Society and the WYBC campus radio station. Cavett graduated from Yale in 1958.
The Road to Show Business
After graduating from Yale, Cavett moved to New York City to pursue a career in show business. He worked odd jobs to make ends meet, including as a private detective and a copy editor at Time magazine.
Breaking into Television
Cavett's break came in 1964 when he was recruited to host the talk show "The Tonight Show Starring Jack Paar." Cavett's unique interviewing style, which emphasized honesty and depth, quickly made him a popular figure.
The Dick Cavett Show
In 1968, Cavett launched his own show, "The Dick Cavett Show." The program featured a wide range of guests, from Hollywood stars to world leaders. Personal Life
Cavett was married to actress Carrie Nye from 1964 to 2006. After Nye's death, he married writer Martha Rogers in 2010. Cavett has two adopted children with Rogers.
