Dick Vermeil, whose full name is Richard Albert Vermeil, is a football player and coach who is one of the most well-known and respected figures in the city. Dick Vermeil was born in 1936 in Calistoga, California. In 1959, he received a master's degree from San Jose State University, where he also played American football as a backup quarterback. After completing his education, Vermeil became an assistant football coach at Del Mar High School. Over the next few years, he moved to various teams in the school league, working as either an assistant coach or a strength and conditioning coach.

In 1968, Vermeil was invited to be a coach at the prestigious Leland Stanford Junior University, known worldwide as Stanford University. Around the same time, he was also invited to be the head coach of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) football team. Many critics consider this period to be the most successful in the history of the university team; in 1976, the team even won the Rose Bowl, facing off against the strongest team in the league, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

In the same year, Vermeil decided to begin his coaching career in the National Football League (NFL). Despite most teams not believing in the young Dick's talent, he was assigned the most unsuccessful team in the league, the Philadelphia Eagles. Focusing on honing the skills of the existing players rather than buying new ones, Vermeil spent most of his time in training camp and on the field. In just two seasons, he achieved what seemed almost impossible - leading the team to the playoffs for the first time in 18 seasons. The season was particularly memorable for the team's fans due to the fierce competition between Philadelphia and their main rivals, the Dallas Cowboys. Despite the higher skill level of the Dallas players and the legendary Tom Landry as their coach, none of the matches were easy victories.

The following year, Vermeil's team defeated the Dallas Cowboys in the league semifinals but lost to the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XV with a score of 27-10. Despite the team's loss, Dick himself was awarded the NFL's Coach of the Year. To everyone's surprise, he decided to take a long-term break from coaching. Over the next 15 years, Dick worked as a sports critic and host of sports shows on channels such as ABC and CBS. Although he was often asked to return to coaching, the team's management and the coach never reached a consensus.

Even without being the team's coach, Vermeil remains one of the most well-known and respected figures in the city. In 1997, Dick returned to the football world, this time as the head coach of the St. Louis Rams. The first two seasons were the most unsuccessful in his career, but in the third season, when an unknown Kurt Warner replaced the injured starting quarterback, the team started winning almost every game. They easily made it to the playoffs and achieved victory against the Tennessee Titans, marking the first championship in almost half a century for the team. Soon after, Vermeil once again received the NFL Coach of the Year award and announced his intention to retire from coaching.

Just a year later, news broke that Dick would become the new coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Coming to the team only for the sake of victory, he realized in the first season that it would not be an easy win. Over the next seasons, Dick led the team, buying new players, changing tactics, and doing everything in his power, but unfortunately, nothing helped. In 2005, in an interview, the team's coach stated that he would permanently retire from sports coaching at the end of the season, which he did.
