Biography of Terry Butcher
Early Life and CareerTerry Butcher is an English footballer and coach who was born in Singapore a few days before the year 1959 (December 28). His parents moved to England a few years after his birth and he spent his childhood in the town of Lowestoft, Suffolk. He received his education at Dens Secondary School. It was in Lowestoft where Terry met his wife, Rita. From a young age, Butcher played for amateur youth teams in his town and caught the attention of scouts from Norwich and Ipswich. There are rumors that Terry's father was a fervent Ipswich Town supporter and could not allow him to join Norwich. Therefore, Terry's path into professional football was through the Ipswich Town Academy. During that time, the progressive coach Bobby Robson worked at the club, with whom Butcher spent the majority of his career - first at the club and then with the English national team.
Playing Career
Terry Butcher made his debut in professional football in 1978, in a match between Ipswich Town and Everton. The newcomer immediately showed himself to be a brave and selfless footballer. In total, Butcher played 272 matches for Ipswich Town, winning the UEFA Cup and the FA Cup with the team, as well as finishing second in the English Premier League twice. Butcher gained the most recognition as a footballer while playing for Ipswich Town and Scottish club Rangers. From 1980 to 1990, Butcher represented the English national team, playing in three World Cups - 1982, 1986, and 1990. He played a total of 77 matches for the England national team, scoring three goals.
Coaching Career
After the 1985-1986 season, Ipswich Town was relegated from the top English division. The club faced financial problems, and as a result, the management announced that they would have to part ways with several players. Terry Butcher drew interest from several teams. Eventually, in the summer of 1986, Butcher became a player for Rangers (Scotland) for £725,000. Due to his leadership qualities, Terry was appointed captain. In the autumn of 1990, Butcher returned to England, joining Coventry City for £400,000. He played only six matches for the new club before becoming the head coach. In the winter of 1992, he left his post, stating that he was ready to continue his career as a player. Butcher signed a contract with Sunderland, where he played 38 games in the 1992-1993 season. Throughout his coaching career, Terry Butcher has managed several clubs including Motherwell, Sydney, Partick Thistle, and Brentford. In the 2008-2009 season, he served as an assistant coach for the Scottish national team. In 2009, Terry Butcher was appointed as the head coach of Inverness Caledonian Thistle (Scotland), a position he has held for 3 years.
