Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius: Dutch Politician and Minister of Justice

Early Life and Family

Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius was born on June 18, 1977, in Ankara, Turkey. Her father, Yücel Yeşilgöz, was a trade unionist who fled Turkey with his family after the 1980 military coup. They arrived in the Netherlands in 1984 when Dilan was seven years old, and her father became a criminologist.

Education and Career

In 1991, Yeşilgöz-Zegerius enrolled at Vallei College in Amersfoort. She studied Cultural, Organizational, and Management Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam from 1997 to 2003.

After graduating, she worked as a policy officer for the Research and Statistics Bureau of the municipality of Amersfoort (2004-2006). From 2006 to 2014, she was a consultant to the Amsterdam City Council on safety and insurance, where she participated in various political projects.

Yeşilgöz-Zegerius has also been involved in advocacy work. She was a specialist for Amnesty International from 2004 to 2010 and a board member of the non-profit organization Stichting Audiovisuele Antropologie Nederland (SAVAN) from 2008 to 2011.

Political Career

Yeşilgöz-Zegerius joined the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) in 2010. She was elected to the Amsterdam City Council in 2014 and the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament in 2017. She was re-elected in 2021.

On May 25, 2021, Yeşilgöz-Zegerius was appointed State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy in the third Rutte cabinet. On January 10, 2022, she was appointed Minister of Justice and Security in the fourth Rutte cabinet, a coalition government formed after the 2021 parliamentary elections.

Personal Life

Yeşilgöz-Zegerius lives in Amsterdam. She married René Zegerius, an employee of the Amsterdam health department, in 2014.
