Early Life and Education
Safarali Kenjayev was born on February 18, 1942, in Chorryakoron village, Lenin district, Tajik SSR. He came from a Yagnobi background and began his career as a simple irrigator at the "Pobeda" collective farm. In 1965, he graduated from the law faculty of the Tajik State University named after V.I. Lenin.
Legal Career
From 1975 to 1983, Kenjayev served as the prosecutor of the Frunze district of Dushanbe. He then worked as the Transport Prosecutor of the Tajik SSR from 1983 to 1989. In 1989, he was appointed Deputy Prosecutor of the Central Asian Railway, and in February 1991, he became Chairman of the Control Committee under the President of Tajikistan.
Political Career
On December 2, 1991, Kenjayev was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of Tajikistan. However, his tenure was marked by political unrest. In March 1992, protests erupted demanding his resignation, and in April, members of the opposition took hostage a group of parliamentarians and government officials. Kenjayev resigned as Chairman on April 22, 1992.
Civil War and the "People's Front"
Following Kenjayev's resignation, armed clashes broke out across the country, eventually escalating into a civil war. Kenjayev and his associates formed the "People's Front" and attacked government buildings in Dushanbe on October 24, 1992. Over 150 people were killed during the clashes. Kenjayev's supporters declared him president via local radio.
Later Political Roles and Assassination
From April 1995 to 1999, Kenjayev served as Chairman of the Majlisi Oli Committee on Law and Order, Legislation, and Human Rights. On March 30, 1999, he was assassinated in Dushanbe while returning home from work, along with his bodyguard and driver.
