A Pioneer of Serbian Democracy
Nikola Pašić, a dedicated Serbian politician, played a pivotal role in shaping his nation's political landscape.
Early Political Career
From 1874 onwards, Pašić served intermittently as a deputy in the National Assembly (Skupština). Initially aligned with the Liberal Party, he later joined forces with Todorović and other prominent figures to establish the Radical Party.
Unwavering Democratic Ideals
Pašić remained true to his democratic principles throughout his life. As a peasant and petty trader, he refused to seek a career in politics. Instead, he emerged as a highly respected member of his party, steadfastly resisting compromises with the government in pursuit of personal gain.
Influence in the Skupština
Pašić's leadership qualities were evident in his tenure as vice-chairman and chairman of the Skupština from 1889 until the coup of 1894. This event temporarily sidelined him from politics, but he regained prominence after the coup was overthrown.
