Greek War of Independence
With the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence, Kallergis returned to his homeland and fought valiantly under the command of Karaiskakis. He subsequently served as an adjutant to President Kapodistrias.
Military and Political Roles
As commander of a cavalry unit in Athens, Kallergis played a crucial role in the peaceful revolution of September 15, 1843. However, political shifts forced him into exile in London in 1845.
Attempted Coup and Return to Greece
In 1848, Kallergis unsuccessfully attempted a military coup in Greece. He was forced to flee again, this time to Paris. With the onset of the Crimean War in 1854, he was recalled to Greece and briefly served as Minister of War in the Mavrokordatos cabinet.
Ambassadorship and Diplomacy
Kallergis's career reached its peak in 1861 when he was appointed Ambassador to Paris. He used this position to secure French support for the overthrow of King Otto I of Greece and the establishment of the House of Glücksburg.
