By 1951, she had established herself as an esteemed art gallery owner, showcasing the works of renowned artists like Serge Poliakoff, who accompanied her on guitar as she sang heart-wrenching Gypsy ballads.
A Bridge between Two Worlds
Vierny's visit to Moscow in 1959 marked a pivotal moment in her life. Amidst the post-Stalinist thaw, she witnessed the burgeoning of a vibrant nonconformist art scene, populated by talents like Kabakov, Bulatov, and Yakovlev. Inspired by the raw and defiant spirit of Soviet underground culture, Vierny found herself drawn to the soulful melodies of Russian prison songs.
The Birth of a Unique Collection
Recognizing the cultural significance of these songs, Vierny embarked on a mission to collect them, memorizing the lyrics of 24 poignant ballads. With the help of the dissident community, she transported the songs out of the Soviet Union, concealed within her own memory.
