Biography of Dino Zoff

Dino Zoff was an Italian football goalkeeper who achieved remarkable success both on the international stage and in club football. He was born in Mariano del Friuli, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, into a family of farmers.

Early Career

Zoff's early career had a rocky start. At the age of 14, he had trials with Inter Milan and Juventus but was rejected due to his lack of height. However, five years later, he experienced a growth spurt of 33 centimeters and made his Serie A debut for Udinese against Fiorentina on September 24, 1961. Despite the team's 5-2 defeat, Zoff showed great promise and was not to blame for the loss. In his first season with Udinese, he only appeared in four matches as the team was relegated to Serie B. The following season, Zoff became the first-choice goalkeeper and helped the club regain promotion to the top division of Italian football. He then moved to Mantova in 1963, where he spent four seasons and played 131 matches. In 1967, Zoff joined Napoli, where he spent five seasons and played 143 Serie A matches. During this time, he gained significant recognition in Italy and made his debut for the Italian national team in 1968. He contributed to the team's success in the European Championship in 1968 and the World Cup in 1970. Zoff played a total of 112 matches for the national team, captaining the team in 59 of them.

International Success and Records

Zoff's crowning achievement came in 1982 when, at the age of 40, he led the Italian national team to victory in the FIFA World Cup in Spain. He became the oldest player ever to win the World Cup, serving as the team's main goalkeeper, captain, and leader. Until 2021, Zoff held the record for the longest consecutive minutes without conceding a goal in international tournaments among all national teams, with 1,142 minutes played between 1972 and 1974. However, this record was broken on June 26, 2021, by Gianluigi Donnarumma, the goalkeeper for the Italian national team, who played 1,168 minutes without conceding a goal in the Euro 2020 tournament. Zoff is also ranked 8th in terms of the number of official matches played for the Italian national team in its history, with 112 appearances (including 59 as captain).

Club Career and Coaching

Zoff played for several Italian clubs, including Udinese, Mantova, Napoli, and Juventus. After retiring as a player, he went on to coach various Italian clubs, including Juventus, with whom he won the Italian Cup and the UEFA Cup in 1990, Lazio, and Fiorentina. He also coached the Italian national team. Zoff had expressed his belief that he could have continued playing until the age of 50, but he chose to retire at the peak of his form. He mentioned that he felt a lack of respect from younger players in the club who believed his time had passed.

Recognition and Personal Life

Zoff is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. He ranks third in the International Federation of Football History & Statistics' (IFFHS) list of the best goalkeepers of the 20th century, behind Lev Yashin and Gordon Banks. Interestingly, in the same poll conducted for the best European goalkeepers, Zoff surprisingly placed second after Yashin. He was also included in the FIFA 100 list, which honors the greatest living players. In November 2003, Zoff was named Italy's best footballer of the past 50 years by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), receiving the prestigious Italy's Golden Player award.

Zoff is married and has a son named Marco, born in 1967. In 2022, he was nominated as a candidate for the presidency of the Italian Republic.
