The Early Life of Ditlev Gothard Monrad
On November 24, 1811, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Ditlev Gothard Monrad was born. He belonged to the National Liberal Party and served as Bishop of Lolland and Falster.
Political Career and the Second Schleswig War
Monrad played a pivotal role in Denmark's transformation into a constitutional monarchy after 1848. As the head of the Danish government from 1863-1864, he led the country into the Second Schleswig War against Prussia and Austria.
Prussian General Friedrich Heinrich Ernst von Wrangel led the Prussian-Austrian forces, while Chancellor Otto von Bismarck instigated the conflict. The war resulted in Denmark's loss of control over the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein.
Emigration to New Zealand
After the war, Monrad became disillusioned and emigrated to New Zealand. He sent his sons to scout for land, and soon after, he joined them. Monrad settled in Palmerston North on the North Island and purchased 482 acres.
Life in New Zealand and Legacy
Monrad established a farm with his family, raising cattle and sheep. He also assisted the 'New Zealand Company' in recruiting Scandinavian immigrants and helped many Danish settlers establish themselves, particularly in the Dannevirke area.
His work in colonizing New Zealand was interrupted by the Maori uprisings under the leadership of Titokowaru. Monrad hid his possessions and fled to Wellington before returning to Denmark in 1869.
Donation and Honors
Before leaving New Zealand, Monrad donated a valuable collection of old European master sketches and prints, including works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Dürer, and van Dyck, to the New Zealand government. Today, they form part of the collection of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
A school in Palmerston North bears his name in his honor. Ditlev Gothard Monrad passed away on March 28, 1887, at the age of 75.
