Biography of Dmitry Zakharov

Dmitry Zakharov was born on January 30, 1958, in Moscow, to a diplomatic family. He completed his education at the Maurice Thorez Institute of Foreign Languages in 1980 and the Historical Faculty of Moscow State University in 1985.

Early Career

From 1980 to 1987, Zakharov worked at Inoveshchaniye Gosteleradio, where he produced programs for the United States and the United Kingdom. From 1987 to 1991, he served as a correspondent and host of the program "Vzglyad."

"Vzglyad" and National Heroes

Even a decade later, "Ogonyok" positioned the hosts of "Vzglyad" as "national heroes":

"Who remembers how many hosts of 'Vzglyad' appeared in the freest studio in Ostankino on Fridays? Listyev, Lyubimov, Zakharov, Politkovskaya, Mukusev. Who else? Lomakin, Dodolev, Borovik... They became national heroes, embodying the changes within the country, just as Gorbachev was a symbol of perestroika abroad. Because with them, from one Friday to another, we learned to speak aloud: there is still sex in the USSR, capitalism also has a human face, rock and roll is alive, Chernobyl is not an accident but a tragedy... But when we went through almost the entire democratic primer together and learned to speak loudly, it didn't matter anymore who was speaking with us from the 'Vzglyad' studio. For everyone who ever did this, thank you very much."

Later Career

From 1991 to 1994, Zakharov was the author and host of the program "Vedi." From 1994 to 2003, he worked for the television channel "Russia" on programs such as "River of Time," "On the Threshold of the Century," and "Around the World." Since 2003, he has been a member of the NTV television company, serving as the Director of the Scientific and Educational Programs Directorate, as well as a producer and host of programs such as "Military Affairs" and "Their Manners."

Current Work

Since September 2005, Zakharov has been the host of the program "The Price of Victory" on Radio Echo of Moscow. He is married to former television presenter Lena Shmeleva and has two daughters, Anna (from his first marriage) and Vera (from his second marriage).

Awards

In 2007, Zakharov received a special TEFI award for his contribution to the development of Russian television as part of the "Vzglyad" program team. He also won the "Izvestnost" award in 2008 and the "Power No. 4" award in 2009, along with Vitaly Dymarsky, for the best radio program on socio-political topics for a series of radio broadcasts about the Great Patriotic War.
