Early Life and Banking Career
Born in 1882, Dobri Bozhilov graduated with honors from the Commercial High School in Svishtov in 1902. He embarked on a career in banking as an employee of the Kyustendil Bank Agency, a branch of the Bulgarian National Bank. After holding various positions within the bank, he rose through the ranks to become a member of the Board of Directors from 1922 to 1935. From 1924 to 1935, he served as Deputy Governor, and from 1935 to 1938, he ascended to the position of Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank.
Economic Expertise and Academic Contributions
Bozhilov excelled in his role as Governor of the bank, particularly in the area of clearing operations. His reputation as a "wizard of clearing" earned him widespread recognition. Alongside his banking career, he also pursued academic endeavors, teaching economics and finance at the Free University. He actively contributed to economic journals such as "Schetovoditel" and "Stopanska Misul," sharing his insights on various economic issues.
Political Ascent
Bozhilov's expertise and prominence led him into the political arena. He served as Minister of Finance from 1938 to 1943 in the governments of Georgi Kyoseivanov and Bogdan Filov. After the sudden death of King Boris III in August 1943, Bozhilov temporarily assumed the role of co-regent alongside Filov while retaining his position as Finance Minister.
Prime Minister and Nazi Collaboration
On September 14, 1943, Bozhilov became the Prime Minister and Finance Minister of Bulgaria. His government pursued a pro-German foreign policy, aligning with Nazi Germany during World War II. Bozhilov's efforts to suppress the growing partisan movement in the country proved largely unsuccessful.
Downfall and Death
As the war turned against Germany, Bozhilov's government was forced to resign on June 1, 1944. He resumed his previous role as Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank for a brief period. After the Soviet-backed forces came to power in Bulgaria in September 1944, Bozhilov was arrested and sentenced to death by the "People's Court." He was executed in 1944 and subsequently rehabilitated in 1996.
