Biography of Doc Cox

British musician and former television journalist, Doc Cox, known by his stage name Ivor Biggun, was born on July 1, 1946, in Sheffield, Yorkshire. He attended King Edward VI Grammar School in Retford, Nottinghamshire, where he excelled academically and became a prefect.

During his school years in the mid-1960s, Cox developed an interest in writing and became the lead vocalist of the band "Nurk Widebeest and the Mutations." The band gained a reputation for their daring and risqué lyrics, often performing at local dances.

After working as a teacher, Cox joined the BBC in 1969 as a sound engineer. Serendipitously, he filled in for an absent participant during an audition for the BBC TV show "That's Life!" and thus became a part of the program. Under the name Ivor Biggun, Cox led a group that sometimes went by the name "Ivor Biggun" or other variations like "Ivor Biggun and Red-nosed Burglars" or "Ivor Biggun and the Left-handed Wankers." He specialized in songs with suggestive and double entendre lyrics.

One of his songs, "The Winker's Song (misprint)," gained significant attention and was even featured as the "single of the week" in the "New Musical Express." Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols reviewed the song in 1978. Although the single sold well due to Rotten's interest, it was banned from most radio stations due to its explicit content. Interestingly, the song was used in Ibiza nightclubs to clear the dance floor at closing time.

Throughout his career, Cox released four albums of risqué songs and collaborated with reggae musician Judge Dread and eccentric rock musician Screaming Lord Sutch. His final album, "Handling Swollen Goods," was released in 2005 under the label "Stiff Weapon Records."

In 2000, Cox's song "Bras on 45," released by his band "Ivor Biggun and the D-Kups," was included in the collection "Dementia 2000!" The single reached the 50th position on the UK Singles Chart and remained there for three weeks in September 1981.

In 1999, Cox released a compilation album titled "The Fruity Bits of Ivor Biggun," which included four sets of his songs: "The Fruity Bits of Ivor Biggun," "The Breast of Ivor Biggun," "The Beast of Ivor Biggun," and "The Wurst of Ivor Biggun." In October 2006, the label "Stiff Weapon" released a second compilation album called "More Fruity Bits! The Rest of Ivor Biggun" on a double CD.

Cox has been compared to British comedian and singer George Formby, as his song "The Winker's Song" is a clear parody of Formby's humorous musical style. Currently, Cox resides in Suffolk and performs with several bands, including "Trembling Wheelbarrows," at pubs and live venues.
