Dollar: A Rising Star Silenced
Early Life and Music CareerDollar (born Roderick Burton) was the son of a Puerto Rican mother and an African-American father. His musical journey began as a member of the rap group Da Razkalz Cru, signed to Electra Records. In 2003, their single "So Fly" failed to gain traction, leading to the end of their contract.
Meeting Akon and Sean John
Undeterred, Dollar met Akon and P. Diddy in 2003. Diddy hired him as a model for his clothing line, Sean John, which featured Dollar on billboards nationwide.
Rise to Prominence
In 2007, Dollar signed with Akon's record label, Konvict Muzik. His debut single, "Who The Fuck Is That," peaked at number 82 on the Billboard Hot 100. The same year, his song "Feelin' Myself" appeared on the soundtrack to the movie "Step Up."
Commercial Success and Final Tracks
Dollar's second single, "I'm Fucked Up," was released in the summer of 2008. His third and final single, "Make a Toast," supported by Asylum Records' General Geezy, followed in the fall of 2008. He also appeared in the music video for R&B superstar Ciara's "Never Ever."
Tragic Demise
On May 18, 2009, Dollar was shot and killed at the Beverly Center mall in Los Angeles. Witnesses reported a heated argument before the fatal shooting.
Investigation and Aftermath
Aubrey Louis Berry, 23, was arrested later that evening at LAX with the murder weapon. His bail was set at $1 million, but the motive for the killing remains unknown. Konvict Muzik representatives stated that Dollar was in Los Angeles to work on his debut album, "Dollar And a Dream."
