Early Life and Career

Born in Detroit, Michigan, on April 27, 1988, Lizzo moved to Houston, Texas, at the age of 10. In Texas, she discovered her passion for rapping and formed the Cornrow Clique with close friends at age 14.

Minneapolis and Musical Roots

In 2011, Lizzo relocated to Minneapolis and immersed herself in the city's indie music scene. She collaborated with electro-soul-pop duo Lizzo & the Larva Ink and co-founded the female rap/R&B group The Chalice. The Chalice released its debut album, "We Are the Chalice," in 2012, gaining local recognition.

Debut Album and National Attention

Lizzo's debut solo album, "Lizzobangers," produced by Lazerbeak and Ryan Olson, was released on October 15, 2013. The hip-hop-based album received regional and national acclaim. Lizzo toured the album extensively in 2013, opening for Har Mar Superstar. Time magazine named her one of 14 musicians to watch in 2014.

Collaborations and Mainstream Recognition

On June 1, 2014, Lizzo performed "A Change Is Gonna Come" with St. Paul and The Broken Bones. She made her "Late Show with David Letterman" debut on October 7, 2014. In September 2014, Lizzo and The Chalice contributed to Prince and 3rdeyegirl's album "Plectrumelectrum" on the track "BoyTrouble."

Major Label Success

Lizzo's second album, "Big Grrrl Small World," was released on December 11, 2015. Her first major-label EP, "Coconut Oil," followed in October 2016. Lizzo toured with Haim and Florence and the Machine in 2018. On January 4, 2019, she released the single "Juice" on Atlantic Records.

Breakthrough with "Cuz I Love You"

On February 14, 2019, Lizzo released the title track from her third studio album, "Cuz I Love You," which was fully released on April 19, 2019. The album was a critical and commercial success, earning Lizzo eight Grammy Award nominations.

Body Positivity and Empowerment

Throughout her career, Lizzo has been an outspoken advocate for body positivity and self-love. Her music and performances embrace diversity in body size, sexuality, race, and other characteristics. Her dance crew, The Big Grrrls, consists of plus-size dancers.
