Early Life and Education

Domenico Cotugno was born into a humble family near the city of Bari, Italy. He pursued his studies in medicine at the University of Naples, graduating with distinction.

Career and Medical Breakthroughs

Upon graduating, Cotugno remained at the University of Naples and also worked at the Ospedale degli Incurabili. He later served as personal physician to King Ferdinand IV of Naples.

As a young scholar, Cotugno made significant contributions to the field of anatomy. In his seminal work, "De aquaeductibus auris humanae internae" (1760), he described in detail an aqueduct in the temporal bone, known as the Aquaeductus Cottunnii. He was also the first to identify the nasopalatine nerve, responsible for sneezing, and the sciatic nerve.

Renal Disease and Other Discoveries

Cotugno's keen observation led him to discover the presence of protein in the urine as an indicator of kidney disease. He conducted extensive research on diseases such as arthritis, sciatica, and smallpox, expanding the understanding of these conditions.
