Biography of Dominique Mamberti

Dominique Mamberti, a Vatican diplomat and curial official, was born on March 7, 1952, in Marrakesh, Morocco. In 1981, he was ordained as a priest and assigned to the diocese of Ajaccio on the island of Corsica. He holds degrees in canon and civil law.

Appointment as Head of Vatican Diplomacy

In 1986, Mamberti joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He served in the nunciatures (embassies) in Algeria, Chile, the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the UN, Lebanon, and the Section for Relations with States. In 2002, he was appointed titular archbishop of Sagona and apostolic nuncio to Sudan. Mamberti is fluent in French, Italian, English, and Spanish.

Role as Chief of State Secretariat Relations with States

Mamberti took an oath as the new head of the Vatican's State Secretariat for Relations with States. In this position, he reports directly to the Secretary of State, the head of the Vatican government. His appointment came with the responsibility of clarifying the true meaning of Pope Benedict XVI's statements on Islam during a lecture at the University of Regensburg.

With his expertise in law and extensive diplomatic experience, he is well-equipped to fulfill his duties and represent the Holy See in international relations.
