Mark Goddard: A Man who Amputated his Own Hand
Mark Goddard, a British man living in Newton Abbot, Devon, is known for amputating his own left hand after being repeatedly denied the surgery by medical professionals. After enduring constant pain for 16 years, Mark reached his breaking point and took matters into his own hands.

A Life of Pain
Mark Goddard, now 44 years old, has been living with chronic pain for the past 16 years. In a horrific car accident, Mark severely injured his left hand, which caused him to experience constant pain. Despite seeking help from hospitals and pleading with doctors to amputate his hand, he was repeatedly told that his hand was healthy. This led Mark to feel desperate and hopeless in finding relief from the agony he was enduring.

A Desperate Measure
Having exhausted all other options, Mark decided to take extreme measures to help himself. He constructed a small guillotine in his backyard and sharpened an axe, preparing for the self-amputation. Mark did inform the hospital staff that if they refused to amputate his hand, he would do it himself. Unfortunately, no one believed him or took his threat seriously.

The Self-Amputation
On the designated day, Mark swung the axe at his hand, but it did not cleanly separate. He was forced to use a knife to complete the amputation. He immediately burned the severed hand in a bucket, fearing that doctors would attempt to reattach it, subjecting him to even more pain. When his wife Samantha returned home, she discovered Mark bleeding with the bloody stump in place of his hand. She promptly called paramedics, who rushed him to the hospital where his wound was properly treated and stitched.

A Life Without Pain
Reflecting on his decision, Mark acknowledges that self-amputation may not have been the best course of action. However, he firmly believes it was the only way to free himself and his family from the constant suffering. Without a hand, Mark no longer has to face the debilitating pain he endured for 16 long years. He can finally return to work, as the pain had forced him to quit his job as a mechanic. Despite being evaluated by psychiatrists and deemed mentally sound, Mark's decision to amputate his hand was driven solely by the desire to escape the relentless pain.
The Aftermath
Unfortunately, after the amputation, Mark experienced pain in his wrist, the area from which he removed his hand. To prepare for any future complications, he has already informed medical professionals that he knows what to do if necessary – amputate his arm below the elbow. Despite the negative consequences, Mark does not regret his decision as he believes it was the only solution to his years of suffering.
