Donald Frederick Draeger was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on April 15, 1922. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1943 and served with distinction, participating in the Battle of Iwo Jima and the occupation of Japan after World War II.

Draeger's interest in martial arts began at a young age. He initially trained in jujutsu but later switched to judo, earning a 2nd dan at the age of 10.

Judo and Organizational Leadership

By 1948, Draeger had achieved a 4th dan in judo. He was a founding member of the US Judo Black Belt Association and held leadership positions in various judo organizations. He also played a significant role in promoting judo in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.

Representative of American Judo

In 1953, Draeger represented American judo at international competitions in Cuba and Belgium. In 1964, he was the US Amateur Athletic Union's judo representative in Japan, advocating for its inclusion in the Olympic Games.
