Biography of Dora Russell
Dora Russell, a renowned British activist, author of numerous progressive ideas, and an active feminist, was born on April 3, 1894, into a middle-class English family. She was the second of four children. Her father, Sir Frederick Black, held a government position and had high hopes for his children, dreaming that each of them would receive an excellent education and achieve great heights in the future. Dora proved to be exceptionally talented. After attending a private school, she was awarded a youth scholarship and the opportunity to study at Sutton High School.
In 1911, Dora Russell enrolled in a specialized educational institution for girls in Germany and spent about a year there, preparing for her studies at Girton College, Cambridge. Soon, Dora became an active member of the Heretics Society, an organization advocating for the rejection of traditional values and religious dogmas, while promoting feminist principles. In June 1915, Dora Russell graduated from Girton College with honors, earning a red diploma and a degree in linguistics.
In the autumn of the same year, Dora went to London and entered the graduate program at University College London. In 1916, Dora met Bertrand Russell for the first time and was charmed by him. They became close three years later, after spending a vacation together.
In 1920, the couple visited Russia and later traveled to China. After their return, Dora and Bertrand got married and soon welcomed their first child, John Russell. In 1924, Dora Russell participated in the establishment of the Workers' Birth Control Group and simultaneously joined the Labour Party.
In 1927, the couple founded Beacon Hill School, where they aimed to teach children to live without superstitions and outdated views held by previous generations. After World War II, Dora became an advocate for the peace movement and actively campaigned for nuclear disarmament. Her work in promoting peace was of great significance.
