Biography of Doris Eaton Travis

Doris Eaton Travis was born in 1904 in Norfolk, Virginia. She was born into a large family of seven children, all of whom had a passion for the performing arts. She began performing on stage as a child, and at the age of 13, she made her Broadway debut alongside her sisters, Mary and Pearl Eaton, who were also dancers. Together, they appeared on stage at the Theatre in Washington.

In the early 1920s, Doris made her debut on the silver screen, starring in several silent short films, including the British films "At the Stage Door," "The Call of the East," and "Tell Your Children." Throughout the 1920s, Doris had the opportunity to act in ten films.

During the 1930s, Eaton continued to perform on Broadway. After her stage career came to an end, she became a dance instructor. She worked alongside the famous dance instructor Arthur Murray at his studio, the "Arthur Murray Dance Studios." Over the years, Eaton became one of the most influential and popular dance instructors in the United States, overseeing around twenty dance schools. One of her students, Paul Travis, became her husband, and they were married from 1949 until his death in 2000.

In the late 1960s, after retiring, Doris and her husband moved to their ranch in Norman, Oklahoma. However, her acting career was reignited in the late 1990s when she returned to Broadway after a three-decade hiatus. She appeared in the musical show "Easter Bonnet Compilation" and received tremendous acclaim, becoming the highlight of the show. Despite being over 90 years old at the time, Doris captivated audiences and received standing ovations.

In 1992, at the age of 88, Doris graduated with honors from the University of Oklahoma. In 2004, in honor of her 100th birthday, she received an honorary degree from Oakland University. In 1999, she made a small appearance in the comedy film "Man on the Moon."

In her later years, Doris remained active in public life. She was the last surviving "Ziegfeld Girl" and appeared in several documentaries and books. In January 2008, she served as the marshal of the Art Deco Weekend festival parade in Miami Beach. Her final public appearance was at the opening of the Easter Bonnet show in April 2010.

Doris Eaton Travis, a Broadway star, actress, and dancer, lived a long and fascinating life dedicated to her passion for the arts. She passed away on May 11, 2010, at the age of 106, from an aneurysm. She was laid to rest at the Guardian Angel Cemetery in Rochester, Michigan.
