Doug Gilmour: A Legendary NHL Star
Early Career and DraftDoug Gilmour, a former Canadian hockey player, was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the 1982 NHL Draft with the 134th overall pick.
Defensive Specialist Emerges
In his early seasons with the Blues, Gilmour established himself as a renowned defensive specialist. He consistently notched around 50 points per season, peaking with a spectacular 105-point campaign in 1986-87.
Stanley Cup Triumph with the Flames
Gilmour's tenure in St. Louis was cut short in 1988 due to legal issues. He joined the Calgary Flames, where he promptly captured the Stanley Cup in his first season.
Stellar Years in Toronto
From 1991-92, Gilmour played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he enjoyed two consecutive 100-point seasons (127 in 1992-93 and 111 in 1993-94). He also earned the Selke Trophy in 1993 as the league's top defensive forward. Gilmour served as captain of the Maple Leafs from 1994 to 1997.
Later Career and Retirement
Gilmour was traded to the New Jersey Devils in 1997, where he made two playoff appearances. He then joined the Chicago Blackhawks and later played for the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens. Gilmour returned briefly to Toronto in 2002-03 but played only one game before retiring.
NHL Legacy
Gilmour played 1,474 regular season NHL games, amassing 1,414 points (450 goals and 964 assists). He was known as an exceptional defensive player and a consistent offensive contributor. Gilmour holds the record for most points scored by a left-wing in Maple Leafs franchise history.
