Dragan Džajić: Yugoslavia's Legendary Winger
Early Career and Red Star Belgrade BreakthroughDragan Džajić, a former Yugoslav football virtuoso, made his debut for Red Star Belgrade at the tender age of 16. The young left winger quickly established himself as a key player, leading the club to three consecutive league titles from 1968 to 1970.
International Stardom
In 1964, at the age of 18, Džajić represented Yugoslavia at the Tokyo Olympics. By 1966, he was the team captain. His exceptional performances earned him a spot on Yugoslavia's squad for the 1968 European Championship, where he emerged as the tournament's top scorer.
Golden Ball Recognition and Continental Success
Džajić's remarkable talent earned him a third-place finish in the 1968 Ballon d'Or voting. He was named Yugoslav Sportsman of the Year in 1969 and was nominated for the Ballon d'Or again. In the 1970/71 season, he guided Red Star to the semi-finals of the European Cup.
Adventure in France
In 1975, Džajić left his beloved Red Star for French club Bastia. His first season was modest, but in his second, he excelled, scoring 21 goals and finishing sixth in the league's scoring charts.
Return to Red Star and Club Records
Midway through 1978, Džajić returned to Red Star for a final season. He remains the club's all-time record holder with 330 league appearances. As a testament to his legendary status, he was bestowed the club's "Third Star" award, an honor reserved only for the greatest players.
Technical Director and Presidency
After retiring as a player, Džajić became Red Star's Technical Director. Under his guidance, the club achieved its greatest triumph: winning the European Cup and Intercontinental Cup in 1991. From 1998 to 2004, he served as the club's president before stepping down due to health issues.
National Team Career
Džajić debuted for the Yugoslav national team in 1964. He represented his country at two European Championships, the 1974 World Cup, and the 1964 Olympics. With 85 caps, he holds the record for the highest number of appearances for the former Yugoslavia national team.
