Dražutin Babić: Legendary Yugoslav Footballer
Early Life and Club CareerBorn in Zagreb, Croatia, Dražutin Babić was a remarkable defender who left his mark in Yugoslav football history. He played for the prestigious Građanksi Zagreb, where he captained the team to three Yugoslav championships (1923, 1926, 1928) and one runners-up title (1925). Babić also led Građanksi to the quarter-finals of the 1928 Mitropa Cup, where they narrowly lost to Czechoslovakia's Viktoria Žižkov.
After leaving Građanksi, Babić joined another Zagreb club, Concordia. With Concordia, he won the Yugoslav championship in 1930 and finished as runners-up in 1930/31.
International Career
Babić made his debut for the Yugoslav national team in 1921 and went on to represent his country in 10 official matches, scoring 2 goals. He was part of the Yugoslav squads for the 1924 and 1928 Olympic Games but only played in the 1924 edition, where Yugoslavia suffered a heavy defeat to Uruguay.
Babić's most memorable international appearance came in 1928, when he played alongside his younger brother Nikola in a friendly match against Turkey. This marked only the second time two brothers represented Yugoslavia simultaneously.
Later Years and Legacy
After retiring from football in 1931, Babić lived a private life. He passed away in 1945, leaving behind a legacy as one of Yugoslavia's greatest defenders.
