Early Life
Born into a family of silverwork craftsmen, Drury initially followed in his father's footsteps. However, his passion for insects led him to abandon his inherited trade in 1748.
Dedication to Entomology
Immersed in the study of insects, Drury quickly established himself as a prominent entomologist. He served as President of the London Society of Entomology from 1780 to 1782.
Legacy and Works
Drury's prolific contributions to entomology included three groundbreaking volumes published between 1770 and 1787: "Illustrations of Natural History," featuring over 240 drawings of exotic insects. This work was later republished as "Illustrations of Exotic Entomology" in 1837.
Passionate Collector
Drury was an avid collector, amassing an impressive entomological collection of over 11,000 specimens. His meticulous approach to preserving and classifying insects left a lasting legacy.
Later Life and Demise
Drury spent his later years in Turnham Green, where he passed away. He was laid to rest in St. Martin-in-the-Fields. His contributions to entomology continue to be recognized and appreciated by entomologists worldwide.
