Dušan Kovačević: An Acclaimed Serbian Playwright and Filmmaker
Early Life and EducationDušan Kovačević was born in Novi Sad, Serbia. He graduated from gymnasium there and later earned a degree in dramatic arts from the University of Belgrade in 1973.
Theater Career
From 1974 to 1979, Kovačević worked as a playwright for Belgrade Television. In 1998, he became the artistic director of the Zvezdara Theater. His theatrical works have achieved both critical and popular acclaim in Serbia. His plays have been translated into 17 languages.
Filmmaking
In 2003, Kovačević made his directorial debut with the film "Profesionalac" (The Professional). This was followed by screenplays for adaptations of his own plays, including "Marathonci trče počasni krug" (Marathon Runners Run a Lap of Honor), "Mesto susreta" (Meeting Place), and "Balkanski špijun" (Balkan Spy).
International Recognition
Kovačević's play "Balkanski špijun" was notably performed in Beijing during the Tiananmen Square protests and was banned by the authorities. His screenplay for "Underground," directed by Emir Kusturica, won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Honors and Affiliations
Kovačević is a member of the Council of the Crown of Alexander Karadjordjevic and the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
