Dušan Zinaja: A Pioneer in Yugoslav Football

Dušan Zinaja was a prominent Yugoslav Croatian footballer, forward, and coach. He made significant contributions both on and off the field.

Early Life and Career

Born into a Croatian family, Zinaja spent his entire playing career with the Zagreb-based club HASK. In addition to football, he excelled in cross-country skiing and represented the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes at the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, competing in the 18 and 50-kilometer races.

International Debut and Unique Sibling Experience

Zinaja made his sole appearance for the Kingdom's national team on June 10, 1923, in a friendly match against Romania in Bucharest. Notably, his younger brother, Branko, also played in the same match, marking the first time two brothers had simultaneously represented the Yugoslav national team.

Transition to Coaching

After retiring from playing, Zinaja became the first player in Yugoslav history to later lead the national team as coach. He took over the helm on September 28, 1924, and remained in charge until November 4, 1925. Under his guidance, the Kingdom of SCS played three matches.

Tragic End

Zinaja's life was tragically cut short on September 26, 1948, when he died in a car accident near the village of Poklek, close to Zagreb, at the age of 55. He left behind a legacy as a pioneering figure in Yugoslav football, remembered for both his playing and coaching contributions.
