Early Life and Political Beginnings
Janet Mills, the 75th elected Governor of Maine and the current Attorney General of the state, was born into a political family. Her brother, Peter Mills, is a Republican state senator who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2006 and 2010. Despite her family's Conservative leanings, Mills has always identified as a Democrat.
Her political journey began with an unsuccessful congressional campaign in 1994. Later, she became vice chair of the Maine Democratic Party and co-founded the Maine Women's Lobby, an organization advocating for women's rights.
State Senator to Attorney General
In 2002, Mills was elected to the Maine State Senate, where she served until 2012. As a senator, she focused on issues such as education, healthcare, and environmental protection.
After leaving the Senate, Mills was appointed Attorney General of Maine in 2013. In this role, she often opposed Republican Governor Paul LePage, challenging the legality of several of his decisions.
