Early Life and Football Beginnings
At the tender age of 14, Jimmy Bailey joined Tottenham Hotspur, initially playing for Finchley FC. However, with the outbreak of World War II, he was conscripted into the army, serving with the Royal Highland Fusiliers.
Tottenham Hotspur Career
In October 1946, Bailey was first named in Tottenham's squad, making his debut on January 19, 1947. Under the guidance of manager Arthur Rowe, Tottenham played a distinctive style known as "push-and-run," characterized by ball control, movement, and aerial play. Bailey epitomized this style, boasting a powerful shot that saw him net 69 goals in 325 matches for Spurs. He was instrumental in their First Division title win during the 1950/1951 season.
Departure from Tottenham and Subsequent Career
After Rowe's departure, Bailey left Tottenham, briefly playing for Nottingham Forest before retiring as a player. He had also represented the England national team at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.
Return to Tottenham and Later Career
In 1963, Bailey returned to Tottenham as assistant manager. He remained in this role until 1974, when Bill Nicholson stepped down as manager. Bailey held various positions with West Ham United until his retirement in 1992.
