Early Career and MLS Stardom

American soccer sensation Eddie Johnson emerged as a promising forward in the early 2000s. In 2001, he became one of the league's youngest signees after being selected by FC Dallas in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft.

In 2005, Portuguese giants Benfica offered a $5 million transfer for Johnson, but both the league and Johnson himself declined the offer. In 2006, Dallas traded Johnson to Kansas City Wizards in a salary cap maneuver.

International Success and World Cup Glory

Johnson's international career blossomed in the early 2000s. In 2003, he won the Golden Boot as the top scorer at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He made his senior debut for the United States in 2004, scoring his first international goal in a World Cup qualifier.

In 2006, Johnson was a member of the United States squad that participated in that year's World Cup.

European Adventures

In the mid-2000s, Johnson had a brief stint in England, training with Reading FC and attracting interest from Derby County. However, he remained in Kansas City to finish the season.

In 2008, Johnson finally made the move to Europe, signing for Fulham FC on a contract until 2011. He spent the 2008/09 season on loan at Cardiff City and later had stints with Aris Thessaloniki in Greece and Preston North End in England.

Return to MLS and Retirement

In 2012, Johnson returned to the MLS, signing for the Montreal Impact and later being traded to the Seattle Sounders. In 2013, he moved to D.C. United, where he spent the remainder of his career.

In 2015, Johnson announced his retirement due to heart problems. He had made a significant impact on the sport, receiving the U.S. Young Male Player of the Year award in 2004 and helping the United States win the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2007 and 2013.
