Education and Career
Edmond-Rufin Iosifovich Dzierżyńskiwas born on May 15 (27), 1838, in the village of Oshmyany in the Vilna Governorate. After completing his studies at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at St. Petersburg University in 1863, he relocated to Vilna.
Teaching in Vilna and Херсон
In Vilna, Dzierżyński initially served as a private tutor for the daughter of Professor Januszowski, whom he later married. He subsequently taught at the Kherson Gymnasium.
Transfer to Taganrog
In 1868, Dzierżyński was transferred to Taganrog, possibly due to his involvement with the Kherson populist circle led by his former student Solomon Chudnovsky. He taught physics and mathematics at the Mariinsky Women's Gymnasium (1868-1873) and the Alexander Men's Gymnasium (1873-1875), counting Anton Chekhov among his pupils.
Retirement and Family Life
In 1875, Dzierżyński retired due to health reasons and moved to his estate, Dzierżynowo. His wife, Helena Ignatyevna Januszowska, gave birth to their fourth child, Felix Dzierżyński, in 1877. Their eighth child, Władysław (1881-1942), became a renowned neurologist and was executed by the Germans during World War II. Another son, Kazimierz, was also killed during the Resistance in 1943.
Death and Legacy
Edmond-Rufin Iosifovich Dzierżyński passed away from tuberculosis in 1882 and was laid to rest in the rural cemetery near his estate. His educational work and the accomplishments of his descendants, including his son Felix, a prominent revolutionary and Soviet leader, left a lasting legacy on Russian and Polish history.
