Early Career at Utrecht
Edson Braafheid's professional football journey commenced in 2003 with Utrecht. For four years, he represented the team, featuring in 81 matches and scoring twice.
Breakthrough with Twente
In the 2006/07 winter transfer window, Braafheid joined Twente as a free agent. Initially playing as a left-back, he was shifted to the central defense by then Twente manager Fred Rutten. Braafheid excelled in his new role, displacing Ramon Zomer from the starting lineup.
Transfer to Bayern Munich
On June 11, 2009, Braafheid moved to Bayern Munich for a transfer fee of €2.5 million from Twente. However, he struggled to establish himself in the starting lineup and requested a loan in search of regular playing time ahead of the 2010 World Cup.
Loan Spell at Celtic
In February 2010, Bayern loaned Braafheid to Scottish club Celtic until the end of the season. He quickly became a regular in the Celtic defense, making his debut against Dunfermline Athletic in the Scottish Cup. However, after Tony Mowbray's departure as Celtic manager, Braafheid lost his place in the lineup.
Return to Hoffenheim
Upon returning to Bayern without securing a regular spot, Braafheid moved to Hoffenheim on January 27, 2011. His debut was marred by a red card minutes after coming on as a substitute. He scored his first and only goal for Hoffenheim on April 28, 2012, against Nürnberg.
Loan to Twente
On August 31, 2012, Braafheid was sent on loan back to his former club Twente for the 2012/13 season.
Second Stint at Utrecht
Braafheid returned to his first club Utrecht on August 17, 2016, signing a one-year contract.
Venture to Austin Bold
In August 2018, Braafheid joined Austin Bold, one of the three inaugural players signed by the expansion United States League Championship (USL) club.
International Career
Braafheid won the 2006 European Under-21 Championship with the Netherlands U21 team. In 2009, he made his international debut for the senior team against Tunisia. He was part of the Netherlands squad that finished as runners-up at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, appearing in one match as a substitute against Spain in the final.
