Biography of Eduard Agabekyan

Eduard Artavazdovich Agabekyan was born on June 2, 1963, in the village of Aknakhpyur, Askeran District, Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. He is a Nagorno-Karabakh political and state figure, as well as the mayor of Stepanakert.

Early Life and Education

Agabekyan completed his secondary school education in 1980 and later enrolled at the Mkhitar Gerasim Medical Institute in Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. He graduated from the institute and began working in Stepanakert in 1986, while also teaching at a medical school.

Political and Military Career

From 1992 to 1998, Agabekyan served in the ranks of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic defense army. In June 1993, he became the head of the medical service in the Askeran defensive district. He held the position of Deputy Minister of Health of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic from 1998 to 2000.

On June 18, 2000, Agabekyan was elected as a deputy of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic parliament. From July 5 of the same year, he has been the chairman of the permanent committee on social issues of the republic's parliament. He is also a member of the initiative group of the socio-political organization "Movement-88," which was established in February 2004. Agabekyan was awarded the "Battle Cross" of the second degree.

Mayor of Stepanakert

On August 22, 2004, Agabekyan was elected as the mayor of Stepanakert, receiving 55.3% of the votes. He has since been serving in this position, contributing to the development and governance of the capital city of Nagorno-Karabakh.
