Ronnie Kasrils: The Anti-Apartheid Revolutionary

Ronnie Kasrils was a prominent South African anti-apartheid activist, underground operative, and high-ranking member of the South African Communist Party (SACP), the African National Congress (ANC), and the National Intelligence Service.

Early Life and Influences

Born in Johannesburg to Lithuanian and Latvian Jewish immigrants who had fled pogroms in tsarist Russia, Kasrils was raised by his mother in a spirit of religious and social equality. His education at King Edward VII School exposed him to the history of the French Revolution, which inspired him to draw parallels between apartheid and the oppression of French peasants.

Joining the Struggle

After working as a screenwriter in Johannesburg and a television and film director in Durban, Kasrils's political consciousness was awakened by the Sharpeville massacre in 1960. He joined the ANC and became secretary of the Democratic Congress, an allied party. In 1961, he joined the banned Communist Party.

UMkhonto we Sizwe and Underground Life

Kasrils was a co-founder and leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the armed wing of the ANC. He received military training in Odessa, USSR, and later became Chief of Staff and Head of Intelligence for MK. To evade persecution by South African security forces, he led a nomadic life across London, Luanda, Maputo, Swaziland, Botswana, Lusaka, and Harare.

Post-Apartheid Era

After the abolition of apartheid in 1994, Kasrils held several prominent positions in the new South African government. He served as Deputy Minister of Defense (1994-1999), Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry (1999-2004), and Minister of Intelligence (2004-2008).

Authorship and Legacy

Throughout his political career, Kasrils was a prolific writer, contributing articles on a wide range of topics, including national defense, the anti-apartheid struggle, environmental issues, and international conflicts. He also penned several books, including the acclaimed memoir "Armed and Dangerous: From Undercover Struggle to Freedom."
